Scripture Power

Last night I went to The Mormon Channel, the official radio station of the church, and "Scripture Stories" happened to be on at the perfect time. We sat and listened to the stories read out of the illustrated storybooks (children read round-robin style) and a teacher stopped to ask questions and applied the story to their lives. It was a great way to mix up our scripture study!! They also played 3 or more primary songs that applied to the scripture story that was read. I wish it were on every night! Here's the description found online:

"Scripture Stories is a weekly radio series, designed to inspire children to come to know and love stories from the scriptures. Each episode features children sharing their insights and favorite experiences from the scriptures, along with music and readings of the best stories from the scriptures."

You can find the schedule online. Go HERE.

The Sugar Shack

I just wanted to give a little verbal boost, and personal recommendation for a local candy store in Hummelstown. The Sugar Shack has tons of fun items, even "old school" candy that I use to love as a kid, that is hard to find on grocers shelves. If you haven't been there, its worth the trip down memory lane. The have lots of sugar free stuff in their store and they have tons of homemade fudge, chocolates and treats that are Divine.
I buy my chocolate and candy flavoring there. That is how my delicious raspberry chocolate truffles are made! You definately need to check this place out if you haven't. Maybe your kids can earn a trip to the candy shop by helping around the house. Whatever the reason for going, lets support our local stores during these hard economic times!

I need your Votes!

First off, I have a confession to make: I listen to country music regularly. Now that that's off my chest,

Last week I heard a commercial for a "babies firsts" picture contest on WIOV.

The grand prize is 4 tickets to Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster that we haven't been to yet. And 2 tickets to the Brad Paisley concert. (Which I'll be taking a friend to, since Nate would rather pour lemon juice in a paper cut than go to a country music concert.)

I figured I'd put in an entry and had the perfect picture of a Liam first when he was 14 months. It was the first time we let him have mashed potatoes and feed himself.

Here is the picture

I got an email today that his picture is one of the top 20 finalists and now it's up to public voting for the winner. WE NEED YOUR VOTE! ( The contest is open to all WIOV-FM listeners who are legal United States citizens 18 years of age or older and who reside in Lancaster, Berks, York, Dauphin and Lebanon Counties in the State of Pennsylvania.)

Here are the ways to vote!

You can do it by going online to WIOV and click on the "click on your favorite first box and vote for Liam online, , or via text message by sending a text message with the keyword “DW5” to 62582 By submitting a text message vote, voters will be automatically enrolled in the Station text club; listeners may opt out of the text club at any time by sending a text message with the word “Stop” to 62582. On June 4, 2009 at 4pm, the eligible entry with the most combined text messages and online votes will be crowned The Big I 105’s Favorite First and win a prize pack from Dutch Wonderland. The five (5) runners up with the most combined text message and online votes received will win the qualifying prize pack. Listeners may vote any time between 12:01pm on May 27th, 2009 and 4:00pm on June 5th, 2009.

You are only allowed one vote for online votes, But as many text votes as you would like to send!

If you have the time, and wouldn't mind voting I'd really appreciate it! And so would Liam!

Southpoint Yard Sale

This Saturday (the 30th) is our huge neighborhood yard sale in Southpoint. We'll have a bunch of things out for people to take and pay any donation they want to the Interfaith Family Homeless Shelter. (I'm too lazy to tag everything and don't feel like haggling over a quarter:)).

At 10:30 AM, we're giving everything away for free! Come take it!

Cadence and Cami are running a gourmet bake sale with their proceeds to the Homeless Shelter as well. It should be fun and there should be lots of great deals! I got our giant gumball machine and our patio set at our neighborhood yard sale a couple years ago for super-cheap!

Weis Midnight Madness Friday May 29th

Hey Guys and Gals~

I was just at Weis and a man who worked there told me about a super-duper-sale that Weis has going on Friday night from 8PM - 12 Midnight. I guess its going to be cRaZy! He gave me an example of a whole seedless watermelon for 1.99. They will have every register open and the flyer is available on Thursday sometime.

Kids in bed, what a fun Friday night!!

STRAWBERRIES

Strawberry season is here! I called Risser Marvel to ask about picking about 2 weeks ago and they said they'd open picking up to the public after Memorial Day and to call about exact times. Last year they charged $2 per pound. Well, I went to Aldi today and got strawberries for 1.23 per pound!!! I know, it's not as much fun to buy them already picked.

If you're interested in making strawberry jam, you'll need 5 1-lb. containers of strawberries, 1/4 c. lemon juice, 7 cups sugar and 1 box of Original Fruit Pectin if you follow the Ball recipe. Walmart has a little aisle devoted to canning again.

I have a 6 Green Chili plants available for the taking if anyone would like them. Each will grow a good number of medium-hot chili this summer. Water Safety Help

Does anyone out there have a good idea of what kind of water safety "thing" I should get for my 18 month month old to wear around the pool this summer? I'm looking at life vests but seriously- who wants to feel like they're in a cardboard box at the pool? I don't know what other options are out there even after searching sporting goods stores online. What are those little things that look like tank tops with tires attached (nice description, huh?)? Does anyone have experience with those or know what they are called? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!!

Free Stuff!

Originally this post was about a glider... but then I realized we have a handful of things we don't need and can donate. If any of you want them, you are welcome to them. If not, we will donate them.
Item 1: Baby Bassinet/Glider--If you have a new baby coming you should take this!! I loved it with both Eli and Dora

We have a yellow glider (not a swing), it glides back and forth (in theory) that we aren't using now. We have been using it for a downstairs bassinet (it's really a comfortable spot to put your baby...

It used to glide...and do music. Eli managed to break the gliding function shortly after Dora was born. If you're handy you might be able to fix it? We tried replacing the batteries (so it has new ones!) but that didn't work. The music still works. We have used it with both kids as a place to let them sleep downstairs... Newborns sleep great in it.

Anyhow, if no one wants it, we will just donate it tomorrow afternoon. They are like $65 at Babies R Us... We have company coming into town and need the room we are storing it in--so if you want it you have to get it today or tomorrow am...

Item 2: Wooden (end) table

This table is awesome--it fits right between a sofa and chair or two chairs and has a little cubby and a tiny little drawer. My grandma gave it to me so I feel a little bad about getting rid of it, but Eli started climbing up on it and using it to vault from the sofa to the chair and I thought DANGEROUS!! I think the cubby was supposed to be for magazines or something. I might keep this if no one wants it--I feel too bad donating it!

Item 3: Things remembered desk clock. It is really nice, perfect condition rosewood, with two pens on it. If you have a desk, you should take it! I just don't have one anymore!

Item 4: White Curtains and a curtain rod. They are actually really pretty and were in my guest bedroom but I made that into a nursery and now I don't need them. They are for a 3 foot window (approximate) but of course the rod expands/contracts so anything in that vicinity (a single window) would work fine.

Feel free to call or email if you want any of the above. Only the glider has to go by tomorrow afternoon. :-)

Thanks,

Bridget Baker

lookin' for a ride

Hi, this is guest blogger Holly Heaston.

My sisters are having fun riding all over the neighborhood on their bikes and I feel really left out. I want to ride something but mean old mommy gave all our scooters away.
If any of you lovely ladies see a tricycle or small bike/trike at a yard sale, would you be so kind to grab it for me? Something that would work for a 2 year old. I'll break open my piggy bank and pay you back, I promise!

Thank you and happy deal hunting,
Holly
